Cong demands FROM govt exact data of 'missing' people
Dehradun, Aug. 11 -- The Uttarakhand Congress on Sunday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for "not releasing the exact number of missing people" in the Dharali tragedy in Uttarkashi district.
Addressing a press conference at the state party office in Dehradun after his return from Dharali, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Karan Mahara said: "The government should release data on how many people were staying in homestays and hotels at the time of the flash floods, as this is a border area. The district administration and local intelligence unit of the police must have this information, but the government has not released the list so far. I demand that such a list be made public.
He also accused the government of emphasising on verification of outsiders "to set its own narrative". "Was the verification of labourers working in Dharali, who had come from Bihar, Nepal, and other places, ever done? Their list should also be released," he further said.
When asked if he was satisfied with the figures released by the state government, he said, "The government is trying to save its image. Near Barkot, a few months ago, there was a cloudburst, and people from that incident are still missing. In Dharali, for how long can those whom the government is listing as missing be expected to remain alive? It should also be known how many phones were active in Dharali before the tragedy and how many are now shut."
He said, "The death toll, as per estimates, will not be less than 100-150." In response, state BJP president Mahendra Bhatt said, "This is a political stunt by the Congress. Their president went there and disrupted the rescue operations."...
