Condom prices face war-time pressure
India, April 24 -- A
s supply chains tighten under the strain of the ongoing US-Iran war, condoms have emerged among the products likely to be hit, with manufacturers preparing for a potential price increase.
At the centre of this shift is Karex Berhad, the world's largest condom producer, which manufactures over five crore units annually and supplies major global brands such as Durex and Trojan. The company is now considering a price hike of 20-30 per cent.
"We have no choice but to transfer the costs to the customers," Karex Berhad CEO Goh Miah Kiat told Reuters.
Meanwhile in India, where condom prices typically range from Rs.30 to over Rs.500, the Rs.8,000 crore condom manufacturing industry is also beginning to feel the strain.

The strain stems from raw material costs. Key inputs such as ammonia and silicone oil have seen price spikes of around 40-50 per cent. Ammonia is used in processing latex and rubber, helping stabilise the material during manufacturing, while silicone oil acts as a lubricant to ensure usability standards....
