CM Mann's chopper deployed to help flood-affected people
Amritsar/Kapurthala/Chandigarh, Aug. 28 -- Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday deputed the state government's helicopter to evacuate people and send relief material to the stranded families in the flood-affected areas.
The CM, who undertook a tour of the affected areas in Gurdaspur district, said several people were stuck in marooned villages so the helicopter was pressed into service to ensure timely evacuation. He said that he would visit flood-affected areas by car while the helicopter would be pressed into service for people.
Interacting with people, the CM said flood control rooms had been set up in all districts. "A mechanism is in place to safeguard the life and property," he said. Mann further said the state government has already ordered a special girdawari to ascertain the losses.
Cabinet ministers Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Hardeep Singh Mundian, accompanied by Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal, visited flood-affected areas in Kapurthala and assured villagers that the state government would provide full compensation for the crop loss. Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa,visited Baupur Jadid and Aahli Kalan villages to take stock of the situation. "The AAP government boasted about spending Rs.230 crore on flood prevention, but when the floods struck, these measures collapsed like a house of cards," Bajwa said.
The CM has directed the ministers to remain in the field until the situation is brought under control. "Our priority is to save every life and property," said finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema. Similarly, ministers Harbhajan Singh ETO Barinder Kumar Goyal, Gurmeet Singh Khuddian and others reviewed the situation in their areas....
