city traders discuss Sec-26 grain market issues with agri officials
Chandigarh, June 5 -- To address long-standing concerns, a delegation from Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM), accompanied by representatives from the Grain Market Welfare Association (GMWA), met with senior officials of the Chandigarh agriculture department on Wednesday and discussed the issues of sanitation and illegal encroachments plaguing the Sector 26 grain market.
The delegation was led by CBM president Sanjeev Chadda and general secretary Balwinder Singh. Representing the GMWA were Mohit Sood (president), Rahul Goyal (general secretary), Sahil (joint secretary), and Sunil Gupta (vice-chairman). The group met with Hari Kallikat, secretary of agriculture, and Pavitar Singh, to express their concerns.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted that unauthorised street vendors and the lack of adequate sanitation facilities are impacting daily operations in the grain market. The delegation added that traders and customers have been facing inconvenience, with hygiene standards falling short and commercial activity suffering due to the unregulated spread of vendors.
In response, Kallikat acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns and assured the delegation that a joint meeting would be convened shortly.
This meeting will include the chief secretary and officials from MC, police department, Estate Office, and engineering department to devise a comprehensive and coordinated plan to tackle both illegal vending and sanitation issues in the market.
The delegation also proposed the installation of physical barricades to clearly demarcate grain market from the vegetable market, a move aimed at reducing overlap, controlling unauthorised expansion, and improving cleanliness in the area.HTC...
