Charges framed against four cops in Manipur
IMPHAL, June 6 -- A Manipur court has framed charges against four former police personnel in connection with the alleged fake encounter of Major Shimreingam Shaiza and four others, nearly 26 years after the incident, officials aware of the matter said.
The incident dates back to August 29, 1998, when Major Shaiza, brother of former Manipur chief minister Yangmasho Shaiza, was travelling with four others in a vehicle reportedly bearing a Nagaland registration. Initial reports filed by Manipur police claimed the personnel had encountered the vehicle near Kwakeithel area during an operation to arrest underground cadres. According to the FIR registered at the time by sub-inspector Th Krishnatombi, the vehicle ignored police signals to stop and allegedly opened fire, damaging a commando vehicle. Police claimed that they fired in retaliation, leading to deaths.
The Imphal West sessions court on Wednesday named then sub-inspector Thokchom Krishnatombi, and three others constables Khundongbam Inaobi, Thangkhongam Lungdim, and Md Akhtar Hussain, who were booked under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), and 34 (common intention) of IPC....
