Chandigarh's Krish Chawla is country's top junior golfer
Chandigarh, May 26 -- Local golfer Krish Chawla, has scripted history by rising to top position in India's junior golf rankings, following a stellar performance at the IGU Andhra Pradesh State Junior Boys Golf Tournament held at the East Point Golf Club in Visakhapatnam from May 19 to 23.
At just 16 years of age, Krish displayed remarkable composure and skill, carding impressive rounds of 71, 67, 69, and 73 for a total of 8-under-par, securing a podium finish and clinching third place overall. This finish catapulted him to the top of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) merit list for boys under 18.
His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed. Krish has now been inducted into the Indian National Junior Squad and has been selected to represent India in two prestigious international tournaments. First, he will tee off at the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Junior Championship to be held at the Hong Kong Golf Club from May 27 to 30, featuring the top junior talent from the region. Following that, he will travel to Singapore to compete in the Singapore Junior Golf Championship at the Keppel Club from June 3 to 6, where 105 of the best amateur players from 16 countries will battle it out.
He declined an invitation to compete at the iconic Old Course at St Andrews-the "Mecca of Golf"-in one of the world's most prestigious amateur events. Instead, he chose to don the Indian jersey. He is also set to participate in the R&A Amateur Championship at Royal St. George's, England, from June 16 to 21. One of the most respected amateur tournaments globally, the event features 288 top amateurs, and the winner gains coveted exemptions into The Open Championship, The Masters, and the US Open.
A student at Strawberry Fields High School, Krish has been training under the guidance of Jesse Grewal at the Chandigarh Golf Academy.
Currently ranked 942 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR)-the youngest Indian to reach such a feat within a year of entering WAGR-listed events-Krish stands as India's No. 1 junior, No. 1 amateur in Chandigarh, and among the top 10 amateurs nationally....
