Chandigarh, Nov. 27 -- The breakaway faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday demanded that the Centre must announce elections for the 191-member Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), noting that 16 years have passed since the last polls were held in 2009. The faction's president and former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, who took charge on September 11, held a meeting with senior party leaders and also pressed for the long-pending Panjab University senate elections, due since October last year. Addressing the media, Giani Harpreet said the party would write to the Union home ministry seeking early SGPC elections. "If the polls are not held, it will be construed that the central government is aligned with the other SAD and its intentions are not clear," he alleged. He added that the party would launch a protest from the Akal Takht if the Centre passes the 131st Constitutional Amendment, which he claimed would dilute Punjab's rights over the Union territory of Chandigarh. "We will not let go of Punjab's right over Chandigarh and will go to any extent to protect it," he said. He criticised the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD faction for demanding Panjab University syndicate elections while "ironically" opposing the conduct of SGPC polls....
