Caught in crosshairs of gang violence
India, Dec. 30 -- Once relatively insulated fromorganised crime, the tricity is seeing a disturbing rise in gangsterism andtargeted killings. The killing of Inderpreet Singh, alias Parry in Sector 26, presumably as a result of the rivalry between Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar gangs, marked a troubling escalation. In Mohali, kabaddipromoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh, alias Rana Balachauria, was gunned down in full public view during a match. In Panchkula, kabaddi player Sonu Nolta, 32, was shot dead,allegedly also at Bishnoi gang's behest.
What it means: Gang wars unfolding in public spaces raise serious questions over policing and public safety. It also raises an uncomfortable question: Is Tricity becoming the Bombay of the '80s and 90s, when gangs ruled the streets of India's financial capital.
What next: While police claim to haveintensified efforts to dismantle these gangs, the Punjab and Haryana HC has summoned the Punjab DGP on the kabaddi promoter's murder, especially since similar incidents have taken place in other parts of Punjab....
