Panchkula, Dec. 17 -- A CBSE Capacity Building Programme on Social Science was conducted at Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula on December 12 and 13. The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising the pursuit of knowledge and collective learning. The two-day programme was led by eminent resource persons Anupama Sharma, National Awardee and expert in experiential learning and inclusive education, and Poonam Anand, an eminent educationist, the HOD, Social Science at Army Public School, Chandimandir. Through interactive sessions, Social Science teachers were familiarised with recent developments in the subject and effective strategies for curriculum transaction. The sessions emphasised adopting an interdisciplinary approach, linking Social Science with real-life contexts in accordance with NCF 2005 and NEP 2020. Focus was laid on developing critical thinking among students, understanding social realities, and addressing key national concerns such as gender, human rights, and marginalized communities. Methods and strategies for teaching Social Science, including the reconceptualization of Civics as Political Science, were also discussed. Challenges such as vast syllabus, time constraints, student engagement with abstract concepts, and rote learning were deliberated upon, highlighting the need for dynamic resources and activity-based assessment. Teachers actively participated by presenting their lesson plans, and the sessions were enriched with relevant stories and anecdotes shared by the resource persons. The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment marking the success of yet another fruitful professional development initiative.
