GUWAHATI, Sept. 2 -- Battle lines have been drawn for the polls seen as a precursor to next year's assembly election in Assam with most major parties announcing their candidates for this month's election to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in the state. The polls are expected to see a keen contest between two local outfits, ruling United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), which was in power earlier. With chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma actively campaigning in the election, Bharatiya Janata Party is also a strong contender. Elections for the 40-member BTC, which controls administration in five districts, will take place on September 22. United Peoples Party Liberal and Bodoland Peoples Front have announced candidates for all 40 seats while BJP has released a list of 28 candidates. Opposition Congress has also released a list of candidates for 40 seats while Asom Gana Parishad, which is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government has announced names of 4 candidates.
