Dehradun, Sept. 22 -- Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) president Karan Mahara asked the state government to cancel the George Everest land allotment to Patanjali co-founder and Baba Ramdev aide Acharya Balkrishna, or his party will launch a mass movement in the state. "George Everest is not only a heritage of Uttarakhand but of the entire nation, and its preservation and promotion are the responsibility of the government. Handing it over to a private individual or organisation is a betrayal of the people of Uttarakhand and their cultural rights," Mahara said. He alleged that giving George Everest land to Baba Ramdev's aide Acharya Balkrishna for profit amounts to cheating the people of the state. "This is a major tourist destination in Mussoorie, where visitors come to witness natural beauty, history, and the legacy of George Everest. The site is not only scientifically significant but also a valuable tourist and historical heritage," he said. Mahara said that the government spent nearly Rs.23 crore on the upkeep of George Everest, while it leased the site to a company linked to Balkrishna for 15 years at just Rs.1 crore annually. "About 142 acres of heritage land, whose market value is over Rs.30,000 crore, has been leased for a mere Rs.1 crore a year," he said. "Public land is being diverted for private gain, and the tender process manipulated to deceive the people," Mahara added. Responding to Congress' allegations, State BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said the site was allotted strictly for tourism purposes following due legal procedures. He added that public access and local activities around the park remain unaffected. "The Congress claims are baseless and completely disconnected from reality," Chauhan said....
