Budget session: End in sight for House disruptions
New Delhi, Feb. 7 -- The first week of the Budget session was a near-washout in the Lok Sabha as the Opposition parties continued to disrupt the Lower House, demanding that Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi be allowed to speak about former army chief General (retd) MM Naravane's unpublished memoir. Opposition leaders, however, indicated they are set to join the discussions on the Union budget next week.
On Friday, too, both Houses were adjourned early amid protests. The developments come a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the first time in 22 years, could not reply in the Lok Sabha to the debate on the President's speech, which was passed through a voice vote amid stifling disruptions in the Lok Sabha. "When we presented our statements on the President's address, the PM didn't respond to a single point. He just kept talking about 100 years... 75 years... 50 years," he said.
He added: "When we got hold of Mr Naravane's book, how could those in power not have it? They're saying in Parliament that the book hasn't even been published yet. Whether it's Amit Shah or Rajnath Singh... everyone kept repeating that the book doesn't exist, but the reality is that the book does exist."
"I want to tell them: first, listen to the truth, then reply. The truth is that Narendra Modi doesn't have the courage to answer the questions we've asked. Modi said that we insulted the Sikhs. Meaning, a conversation between two people outside the House was labelled as an insult to the Sikhs," he said, referring to the animated conversation between Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu and Gandhi.
LoP Rahul Gandhi also took a swipe at PM Modi's speech. "Jo uchit samjho wahi karo" (Do whatever you think is right), he told reporters outside Parliament building....
