Bhopal, Oct. 20 -- Former Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur on Sunday stirred controversy with her remarks exhorting parents to "physically punish or break the legs of their disobedient daughters who choose to marry non-Hindu", with the Opposition accusing the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader of spreading hatred. "If our daughter attempts to marry a non-Hindu, we should spare no effort, even breaking their legs. Those who disobey traditions must be punished," Thakur was purportedly quoted as saying in a video of an event held in Bhopal. HT could not independently verify the veracity of the video. As per the video, she further said: "If your daughters don't listen to you or tries to marry a non Hindu, parent shouldn't hold them back but should beat them. When parents discipline their children, it's for their future." "When a daughter is born, mothers rejoice and say, 'Lakshmi, Saraswati,' has come to our home. Everyone congratulates her. But when she grows up, she chooses to become a Muslim -- she defies tradition, disrespects elders and is ready to run away from home..." Her remarks sparked a row, with Congress leader KK Mishra saying: "In the recent incidents of rape of Hindu girls that have surfaced in Bhopal itself, the faces of a dozen leaders, including Sangh members, propagandists, ministers, MPs, and MLAs belonging to your own clan have come to light... now break the hands, if not the legs of these people. Do you have the courage or are you just talking nonsense?"...
