Breach in drain inundates wheat fields in two Bathinda villages
Bathinda, March 25 -- A 60-ft-wide breach in the Lasara drain impacted the wheat crop in two villages of Bathinda district. Officials said that nearly 70 acres of land in Doomwali and Pathrala, located adjacent to the Haryana border, were flooded on Tuesday.
Villagers said that the breach was spotted on Monday night. Sukhdeep Singh of Doomwali demanded compensation as the breach had flooded the wheat crop. "Crop was at the advanced stage of ripening and the flooding has adversely impacted wheat on my 13 acres. Authorities should compensate farmers for the crop loss," he said.
Deputy commissioner Rajesh Dhiman said timely action to plug the breach controlled the crop from further damage.
"Soon after a breach was recorded, teams were deputed to plug the breach. Field dewatering will commence tomorrow. The administration is also writing to the state government for strengthening bundhs of the drain," added the DC....
