BJP MLAs create ruckus in J&K House, press for NLU in Jammu
Jammu, Feb. 4 -- The Jammu and Kashmir assembly witnessed a stormy session on Tuesday as BJP MLAs vociferously demanded that the National Law University (NLU) be established in Jammu.
As soon as the Question Hour commenced, BJP legislators rose to their feet, creating a furore and carrying placards that read 'NLU for Jammu'. Former minister Surjeet Singh Slathia, drawing the attention of Speaker AR Rather, highlighted that students were already on the streets over the issue. While clarifying that the party was not against an NLU in Kashmir, Slathia insisted that the government must establish a second campus in Jammu to address local anger.
The protesting MLAs demanded that the government clarify its stand and disclose the exact location of the proposed institution, alleging that Jammu has historically been meted out "step-motherly treatment" regarding premier educational institutions.
The protest drew sharp reactions from across the aisle. Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat criticised BJP for violating the decorum of the House by bringing placards inside.
Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Lone took a jibe at the opposition, reminding them that the NLU is a state university with a modest budget of Rs.50 crore, hinting that funding two separate universities would be unfeasible.
The stir follows a pledge by Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma to back the students' agitation. NC's Mubarak Gul and PDP MLA Waheed Para raised concerns over the alleged harassment of Kashmiris in other states. Earlier, NC MLAs staged a sit-in outside the assembly, pressing for the immediate restoration of statehood. PDP's Muntazir Mehdi joined the sit-in.
Accusing the NC government of discrimination against the Jammu region over allocation of funds for flood relief works, two BJP MLAs staged a walkout from the legislative assembly here on Tuesday.
However, deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary outrightly denied the accusations.
Amid heated arguments BJP MLAs Rajiv Jasrotia and Pawan Gupta staged a walkout from the House. During question hour, Jasrotia had sought details of funds released by the Centre for flood restoration works and their district-wise distribution and utilisation.
The deputy CM replied that no funds had been released by the Centre so far in the current financial year 2025-26 for flood restoration works. He added that Rs 289.39 crore had been released under the SDRF and Rs 100 crore under the UT Capex Budget for flood relief measures (Rs 5 crore per district). The Jal Shakti Department also received funds under ongoing flood management projects.
Choudhary said, based on a report of an inter-ministerial central team, the Centre has allocated Rs 1,431 crore under the SASCI scheme for J&K, which would be released once detailed proposals for flood restoration were received. Jasrotia alleged that the deputy minister had misled the House. The BJP MLA claimed that the Centre had given Rs 212 crore as immediate relief. "Jammu, which bore the maximum brunt of floods, was not given adequate funds while Kashmir, was given more funds," said Jasrotia.
BJP MLA Pawan Gupta also levelled similar charges against the NC government. Though deputy CM dismissed the allegations and reminded the House that it was CM Omar Abdullah, who resumed Darbar Move practice that was stopped by BJP in 2021, both MLAs staged a walkout....
