Bihar verdict shows people have rejected casteism: PM
Ahmedabad, Nov. 16 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, asserting that the NDA's overwhelming mandate in Bihar reflected the voters' rejection of the "poison of casteism" propagated by the Opposition.
"The country has rejected this Muslim League-Maoist-Congress, the MMC. There are people in the Congress party who have grown up with nationalist ideology, those who have worked under the leadership of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. A very large section of such Congress leaders are unhappy with the conduct of these dynasts. They say that no one can save the Congress now... this is the state of affairs. People who ruled like a monopoly for 50-60 years have been, in a decade or two, finished off in this manner," the PM said, addressing an event in Gujarat's Surat.
Modi's comments come a day after the NDA scored an overwhelming victory in Bihar as it swept India's third-most populous state and decimated the Opposition's Grand Alliance as it won 202 of the state's 243 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 89 seats, followed by the JD(U) at 85. "There is a 10 percentage point difference in votes between the winning NDA and the losing Mahagathbandhan. This is significant. It means the common voter has voted decisively for one side. And what was the election issue? Development," the PM said in Surat.
He added: "...For the last two years, 'out on bail' leaders used to give speeches about casteism, and they tried to spread the poison of casteism as much as possible. The Bihar elections have rejected casteism. This is a bright indication for the country." Asserting that "all sections of society, all regions of Bihar, have given unprecedented support to the NDA and the NDA's allied parties", Modi cited seats with a strong Dalit influence to show the shift. "There are 38 such seats, and out of these, the NDA won 34 seats," he said.
He added that Congress leaders had no explanation for repeated defeats. "They are unable to explain the reason for defeat to their colleagues, they are unable to explain the reason for defeat to their own party. Hence, they have found an easier escape-sometimes they blame EVMs for their defeat, sometimes the Election Commission defeats them, sometimes the electoral roll revision defeats them. This excuse-making tactic may keep them satisfied for a few days, but in the long run, it will not be acceptable to the party cadre."...
