Kapurthala, Aug. 28 -- With the water level in Pong Dam hovering three feet above its danger mark, the flood situation in the low-lying mand areas of Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur district is likely to worsen further. Nearly 44,000 acres of agricultural land in 90 villages situated downstream in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts are submerged under water released from the Pong reservoir into the Beas. More water is likely to be discharged from the dam in the coming days. Built over the Beas, the current water level in Pong was 1393 feet on Wednesday, against the dam's maximum filling capacity of 1,390 feet. The water inflow was recorded 1.02 lakh cusecs at 5pm from the catchment areas, including Kangra, Mandi, and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) recorded 2.25 lakh, the highest inflow of the season, at 3am on Wednesday. Due to the brimming situation in the reservoir, 94,845 cusecs of water was released in the Beas river, which was 30,000 cusecs more than Tuesday's release of 60,215 cusecs. "Water entered our houses yesterday and later receded, but it has started rising again," said Manjinder Singh, sarpanch of Mehtabpur village in Hoshiarpur district. Kapurthala deputy commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal issued a special health advisory to the people residing in the flood-affected areas. He also asked the villagers to remain extra vigilant. "We are providing every possible help to those stranded in the flood-hit areas. Those who want to be evacuated were provided with boats in order to shift their livestock and other belongings," Panchal said. Meanwhile, Hoshiarpur deputy commissioner Aashika Jain said 44 villages in the district have been affected by floods, 20 in Mukerian sub-division, 13 in Tanda, four in Dasuya, and seven in Hoshiarpur. "As many as 12 relief camps have been set up, including three in Tanda, eight in Mukerian, and one in Dasuya. As many as 646 people have taken shelter in the Tanda camps," Jain said. The farmers have urged the government to provide adequate compensation. A total of 8,758 acres of farmland has been inundated in Hoshiarpur district - 5,500 acres in Mukerian, 3,000 acres in Tanda, and 256 acres in Dasuya . In Haler Janardhan, nearly three-fourths of the residents have shifted to safer places. "On Tuesday, our houses were under two feet of water. Today, water has receded from the village, but fields remain submerged. The bigger worry now is cattle fodder," said a villager. David Masih, the husband of the Kohlian village sarpanch, said half of the people from the village have left for a safer location. "Those who stayed behind fear theft if they abandon their houses," he said. On the Tanda-Sri Hargobindpur road, families from Fatta Kulla, Rara Mand, Talhi Mand and Gandhowal were seen taking shelter in tractor-trolleys and makeshift tents with their belongings and cattle....
