Chandigarh, April 27 -- Sizzling heat continued to sweep through Haryana and Punjab on Sunday, with Narnaul and Bathinda turning out to be the hottest places in both states. Most places in the two states recorded above-normal maximum temperatures. In Haryana's Narnaul, the mercury settled at 44.2degC, according to the MeT here. Among other places in Haryana, Rohtak recorded a high of 43.6degC, Hisar 42.2degC, Karnal 42.2degC, Ambala 41.6degC, Bhiwani 43degC, Sirsa 43degC, while Gurugram's maximum settled at 40.3degC. In Punjab, Bathinda sizzled with a day temperature of 43.7degC. Amritsar recorded a high of 39.3degC, Ludhiana 42.4degC, while Patiala's maximum also settled at 42.4degC. Chandigarh, the common capital of Haryana and Punjab, also braved the heat as the maximum temperature settled at 40.8. In Delhi residents continued to reel under intense heat as the Capital logged a maximum temperature of 42.1 degrees Celsius (degC) on Sunday - three degrees above normal. The national capital is likely to experience similar conditions on Monday as well, with a "yellow alert" for heat in the first half of the day. Spells of rain may bring some relief from Tuesday onwards, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast. IMD classifies a heatwave when the maximum temperature is at least 4.5degC above normal and crosses 40degC; it is also declared if the maximum touches 45degC or more. Relief is likely on Tuesday and Wednesday, with scattered rain and strong winds leading to a marginal cooling effect, with mercury dipping below 40degC, according to the forecast shared by the IMD....
