Srinagar, Jan. 8 -- Cold wave has grips Valley and Ladakh region due to clear night skies, resulting in significant drop in night temperature. The tourist resort of Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir as it shivered at a low of -10.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, the officials said. Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district recorded a minimum temperature of -7.6 degrees Celsius, MeT said in its daily statement. Srinagar recorded -1.6 degree Celsius during night, 2.4 degrees up from the Monday night when Srinagar had recorded -4 degree Celsius. Another tourist resort Pahalgam recorded -7.2 degree Celsius during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile Ladakh is also in the grip of a cold wave, Drass records a minimum temperature of -22.8 degree Celsius. Drass is the second coldest place in the world. Kargil also recorded -11.6 degree Celsius while Leh recorded -13.4 degree Celsius. MeT in its daily bulletin has predicted further drop in night temperature in next three days across Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir, mostly Kashmir valley, has witnessed prolonged dry weather conditions mostly for the past three months causing the rivers to dry up and prompting dozens of incidents of forest fires, weather and forest experts said in a statement. The region is currently in the midst of 'Chilla-e-Kalan', a 40-day period of extreme cold, during which night temperatures often drop several degrees below the freezing point and chances of snowfall are the highest. The plains of the valley have not received any snowfall so far this season. The IMD Shimla office has predicted dry weather in Himachal Pradesh till January 13. The weather office also sounded an alert of cold wave at isolated places in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra and Mandi districts on January 8. An alert of dense fog has also been sounded in several districts in the coming few days. During the last 24 hours, cold wave was observed in Mandi, Kangra, Bilaspur and Hamirpur. The lowest minimum temperature on Wednesday was recorded in Lahaul-Spiti's Tabo at -9.4 degrees Celsius....
