Assam law against love jihad and polygamy: CM
Guwahati, Oct. 23 -- Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said his government would introduce two legislations on 'love jihad' and polygamy in the next session of the state assembly.
"Several historic legislations, including those on 'love jihad' and polygamy, will be introduced in the next assembly...once they get approved by the state cabinet, we will provide more information," Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Nagaon district.
'Love jihad' is a term used by right-wing groups to describe interfaith relationships and the consequences of interfaith marriages.
The chief minister also said that bills on preservations of Satras (Vaishnavite monasteries) and land rights to the tea tribe community will be introduced in the same session.
Earlier this month, Sarma had said that two bills to protect the state's indigenous population from the demographic threat of 'Miyas' will be introduced in the next assembly session. Miya is a pejorative term used primarily in Assam for Bengali-speaking Muslims with origins in erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
Sarma claimed that by the next Census, the population of "Miyas" in Assam would be around 38%. According to the 2011 Census, Muslims comprised 34.22% of Assam's population.
"In the coming assembly session, in order to tackle such a problem, two important legislations would be placed. I won't reveal their details yet. In order to protect our 'jati, mati, bheti' (race, land, homeland), more such legislations would be introduced," Sarma had said on October 10 in Dibrugarh....
