Jalandhar, Jan. 10 -- The vigilance bureau (VB) arrested an assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs.5,000 in lieu of helping the complainant's parents get bail. The accused was identified as Sarabjit Singh, posted at the Phagwara City police station. A VB spokesperson said the complainant, a resident of Issarwal village, narrated that his booked were booked in a case and the ASI threatened that if they didn't pay bribe, they will be sent to jail. The complainant paid Rs.2,000 as bribe, but the accused ASI demanded another Rs.10,000 for helping them get bail. Expressing inability to pay the entire amount, the complainant paid Rs.2,000 and was asked to pay the remaining amount later, he added. The spokesperson added that after a preliminary enquiry, the VB team laid a trap during which the accused was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs.5,000.
