Amit Jogi found guilty in 2003 Jaggi murder
Raipur, April 3 -- The Chhattisgarh high court on Thursday convicted former MLA Amit Jogi, son of state's first chief minister Ajit Jogi, in the 2003 murder case of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ramavatar Jaggi, directing him to surrender within three weeks.
A bench of chief justice Ramesh Sinha and justice Arvind Kumar Verma set aside a trial court's 2007 acquittal and pronounced Amit Jogi guilty.
The high court reopened the case last month after the Supreme Court in November last year asked it to reconsider the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)'s plea challenging the acquittal. It noted there was a delay in filing the appeal, but the charges against Amit Jogi were "very grave", involving a conspiracy to murder a political rival, and warranted consideration on merits.
The court is yet to pronounce the quantum of punishment. Amit Jogi said he was denied an opportunity to be heard and termed the conviction a "grave injustice".
He expressed confidence of getting relief from the Supreme Court. He said he has "full faith" in the judicial system.
