America's oldest man shares secrets to long and healthy life
India, April 29 -- A 111-year-old man, Luis Cano, is believed to be the oldest living man in the United States. Born in Colombia on December 9, 1914, he now lives in New Jersey. His age was officially validated by LongeviQuest in December 2025, placing him among the world's oldest living people. Speaking to Fox 5 recently, Cano shared the simple lifestyle habits he credits for his long, healthy life.
His first piece of advice included avoiding alcohol. "Don't drink a lot," he said. When it comes to longevity, there is no safe limit for consuming alcohol. Even experts validate his claim. Dr Vassily Eliopoulos (@dr.vass) shared on Instagram that alcohol consumption negatively impacts sleep, deregulates the endocrine system, and causes inflammation and cellular ageing.
One of the most overlooked aspects for living a healthy life is getting a good night's sleep, which Cano said is essential. According to Dr Vass, "Sleep isn't a side habit; it's your hormone stabiliser, recovery system, and brain detox tool." An individual needs to sleep for seven to nine hours consistently every day, at a regular time and preferably in a cold, dark, quiet room.
"Don't smoke," Cano advised. The ill effects of smoking need no reminder. It not just affects longevity but also has a noticeable impact on health in the short run, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, staying away from the habit is a no-brainer when working towards longevity....
