All 10 accused held in Odisha gang-rape case
Bhubaneswar, June 18 -- All 10 accused, including four minors, have been apprehended in connection with the gang rape of a 20-year-old undergraduate student while she was visiting the Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district of Odisha, police said on Tuesday. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the gang-rape and directed the Odisha DGP to submit an action taken report within three days.
In her complaint, the victim has alleged that the incident took place late on June 15 when she and her boyfriend were sitting by the Gopalpur beach and the accused approached them, tied up her boyfriend and took turns to rape her.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Berhampur superintendent of police (SP) Saravana Vivek M said that all 10 accused, including four minors aged 17 years, have been apprehended. "Among the 10 accused persons, three are believed to have committed the gang-rape while others acted as accomplice," he said.
The accused have been booked under sections 70(1) (gang rape), 296 (obscene acts and songs), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 310(2) (a gang of persons associated for the purpose of habitually committing crime) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The SP said that police will file the charge sheet in the case soon, and that they will make all efforts for the accused to receive maximum punishment. "As four of the accused are juveniles, police will request the court to treat the minors as adults during the trial as they were involved in an heinous crime," the SP said. "Around 8pm, the accused confronted the couple and tried to extort money from them. They claimed that they shot the couple's pictures and threatened to circulate them if they reported anything to police."...
