AI-altered climax stripped Raanjhanaa of its soul: Dhanush
India, Aug. 5 -- Days after the Tamil version of Raanjhanaa (2013) was re-released in theatres, actor Dhanush has come forward to slam the studio's decision to use artificial intelligence to alter the ending.
Following director Aanand L Rai's disapproval, the actor on Sunday issued a statement on his social media handles, revealing that "concerned parties" went ahead with the AI ending, even after he had objected to it.
Titled "For the love of cinema", Dhanush's note read, "The re-release of Raanjhanaa [titled Ambikapathy in Tamil] with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This has stripped the film of its very soul."
In the original film, Dhanush's character Kundan is wounded by a gunshot and dies with his love interest Zoya (played by Sonam A Kapoor) by his side. In the AI-altered ending however, Kundan opens his eyes and sits up on the hospital bed, leaving Bindiya (played by Swara Bhasker) and Murari (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) in happy tears.
Noting that this has set a "deeply concerning precedent" for both cinema and artistes, Dhanush wrote, "This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films or content... threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future."
Raanjhanaa was re-released in theatres on Friday. htc...
