A 'challan' message, a malicious APK file, a tap and Rs.4L gone
Panchkula, April 2 -- An unsuspecting tap on a WhatsApp message regarding traffic fine turned into a financial nightmare for a Sector 18 resident after Rs.4.11 lakh were unauthorisedly transacted from his account.
The complainant, Brijender Jain, 45, who runs a confectionery shop in Sector 26, told police that on March 22 he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number containing a fake APK file named "M-Parivahan."
The file, he told police, appeared to be a traffic challan. Believing it to be a genuine, he downloaded and opened the file. An option to pay Rs.1 appeared and he made the payment, he further added.
It showed an option to pay Rs.1, which he did. On March 25, another Rs.1 was automatically deducted from his account. On the same day, around 8 pm, multiple unauthorised transactions- three of Rs.95,000 each, one of Rs.18,700, Rs.45,860 and Rs.62,155 - totalling to Rs.4.11 lakh were made from his account.
Realising he had been defrauded through the fake challan, the victim reported the matter on the cyber helpline 1930 and probe was launched.
Cybercrime police have registered a case under sections 318 (4) and 316 (2), 61 of BNS after investigation....
