Dehradun/Pithoragarh, July 16 -- Eight people were killed and five others injured after a vehicle they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Pithoragarh district, a senior police official said The incident took place at around 5 pm when the Maxx pick-up vehicle that was on its way from Muwani village under Thal police station to Bokta village. Superintendent of police Pithoragarh Rekha Yadav said they received information about the accident at around 5.30 pm. Upon receiving the information, the teams from police, state disaster response force (SDRF) were rushed to the spot. She said 13 people were travelling in the vehicle and eight people died on the spot. "Of the five injured, four are stable and have received minor injuries, while one is seriously injured. The seriously injured person has been rushed to Pithoragarh district hospital from where the victim, if required, will be referred to the higher centre," she said. In January this year, eight people were killed in two separate road accidents-four in Haridwar and four in Bageshwar district. In May, four people were killed after a car they were travelling in plunged into a 50-metre-deep gorge in Tehri district.
