Dehradun, July 1 -- Chamoli police arrested seven 'nihang' Sikhs for allegedly attacking a police officer and some locals in Jyotirmath (Joshimath) with sharp weapons on Monday.
The accused were identified as Harpreet Singh, Amritpal Singh, Harpreet Sekand, Binder Singh, Garja Singh, Harjot Singh and Bhola Singh, residents of Fatehgarh in Punjab.
Chamoli SP Sarvesh Panwar said, "A dispute broke out between a local trader and nihangs in Jyotirmath over parking over a scooty. The dispute escalated so much that the nihangs allegedly tried to attack the trader with swords....the trader narrowly escaped. Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot. However, by then, nihang had left for the police station in their vehicles. It was found that the nihang had many other sharp weapons like Kulhar, large double-edged sword, knife and axe, apart from sword and dagger as per religious beliefs. A heated exchange eventually escalated into a physical confrontation. While the police tried to intervene, one of them, identified as Amritpal, attacked a senior sub inspector on the head with a sharp knife, causing two serious injuries to him," Panwar said.
Two separate FIRs were registered against the nighang -- one on a complaint of the injured police officer and another on a complaint of locals. htc...
