5th edition of Balramji Das Tandon cricket meet gets underway
Chandigarh, Nov. 2 -- The fifth edition of the Balramji Das Tandon Memorial Under-16 Multi-Day Cricket Tournament began at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, on Saturday.
UT sports secretary Prerna Puri inaugurated the event and also spun the toss for the first match played between Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh.
Puri also commended Gully Cricket, an initiative of the UT Cricket Association (UTCA), for identifying and nurturing cricketing talent from the grassroots level, thereby strengthening the city's sporting ecosystem.
A total of eight teams from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Delhi, Tripura, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and hosts Chandigarh are competing in the league-format tournament across various city venues.The final will be played on November 16-17.
Chandigarh's disciplined all-round display put them in command at the stumps on Day 1 of the tournament. After posting 199 in the first innings, the home side reduced Himachal Pradesh to 103/7 by the end of the day's play, gaining a crucial 96-run first-innings lead.
Earlier, Chandigarh's innings was anchored by a 55-run knock from Ishant Rawat. He received valuable support from Gursharan Singh (40) and skipper Vedansh Kalkhanday (33). Himachal's Bhavishya Bhardwaj (6/37) starred with the ball.
In reply, Himachal's top order collapsed dramatically against the bowling attack led by Ruhaan Sharma (3/14).
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sanjay Tandon, member, Governing Council, Women's Premiere League (BCCI); Saraansh Tandon, president, UTCA; Mahender Singh, deputy director, sports, UT;and other functionaries of the association....
