Kolkata, Oct. 14 -- A fifth person was arrested on Monday in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student in a forested area near her college campus in Durgapur, West Bengal, late on October 10, police said. The suspect, identified as Sheikh Safiqul, 28, was produced before the Durgapur court along with Sheikh Nasiruddin, 29, who was arrested late on Sunday. Both were remanded in police custody for 9 days, officials said. The three other suspects -- Apu Bauri (21), Firdous Shiekh (23), and Sheikh Riazuddin (32) -- were remanded in police custody on Sunday. All five suspects have been charged under sections 70 (1) (gang rape) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to the remand petition -- a copy of which was seen by HT. A police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the arrests were "made on the basis of phone call records and circumstantial evidence" and that the victim had not named any of the accused in her complaint. "In her initial statement to the doctor, the student said there were three people and only one of them committed the crime," a senior police officer, also on anonymity. "However, she later told the police that said five people dragged her to the forest and gang-raped her."htc...
