5 docs among 6 held over kidney racket in kanpur
KANPUR, April 1 -- Five doctors and an alleged broker has been arrested by the Kanpur police after a payment dispute of Rs.50,000 allegedly blew the lid off a kidney transplant racket in the city, police said.
Citing preliminary findings, police officers said the accused had carried out about 50 illegal kidney transplants in the city, including one involving a South African woman.The Meerut-based doctor allegedly ran a Telegram group to connect donors and recipients and negotiate payments, the officers said.
The racket allegedly came to light after a man from Uttarakhand approached the police claiming he was short-paid Rs 50,000 after agreeing to sell his kidney for around Rs.10 lakh.
Raghubir Lal, commissioner of police, said joint teams of police and officials from the chief medical officer's (CMO) office conducted raids at multiple hospitals on Monday, adding three hospitals in Kalyanpur area were also raided. htc...
