Bathinda, Oct. 1 -- With no work or funds left at hand after being deported from the US in February, Amandeep Singh, 44, is banking on the monthly family pension of Rs 22,000 received by his mother. Amandeep says a Mohali-based travel agent duped him of Rs.40 lakh for a promise to smuggle in into the US. He did not file a police complaint against the agent, hoping to get the money back. "I had sold two acres of family land for Rs 45 lakh to pay Rs 40 lakh to the agent. I kept the remaining cash for travelling via Mexico. After the deportation, the agent promised to return the money, but now he is not even taking my calls. Left with no source of income, travelling to Mohali on the bus to trace the agent has become an impossible task," says Amandeep. Before entering the US illegally this year, Amandeep went to Cyprus in 2007 and worked for five years as a construction worker. "All I wanted was to give my family a better life. My father was a soldier and now our family of four depends solely on his family pension received by my mother. After we were deported, the AAP government in Punjab promised to help our hapless families. But we got nothing from it," he adds....
