4 killed as truck hits bus, overturns on car, bike
Karnal, Dec. 4 -- A truck being driven on the wrong side of the Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway-44 hit a Punjab Roadways bus, an SUV and two motorcycles, killing four people at Gharaunda, 17km from Karnal, on Wednesday morning, police said. The truck driver and his helper were also seriously injured and are under treatment at the civil hospital in Karnal.
The accident occurred around 9 am near Bastara toll plaza when the truck driver, who was "speeding" and headed towards Delhi, crossed over to the other side of the highway and collided with an Amritsar-bound bus and overturned, crushing a car with a Delhi registration number and a motorcycle, police said.
The police identified the motorcyclists as Sanjeev Kumar and Vishal Kumar, both residents of Gharaunda town. They were employed with the district administration. The two occupants of the Maruti Ciaz car, who also died on the spot, were identified as Bhuwan and his father Balbir, both residents of Aligarh district. They were travelling to Ludhiana for some work, police said. The driver and passengers of the Punjab Roadways bus escaped unhurt.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Satyavan, who is investigating the case, said the truck driver has been taken into custody and is reported to have been under the influence of alcohol. His medical report is awaited, he said. "Families of the victims have been informed. The bodies will undergo postmortem examination before being handed over to the relatives. A case has been registered," he added....
