Mohali, Dec. 22 -- The Punjab government intensified efforts to eliminate child begging under the leadership of chief minister Bhagwant Mann. Social security, women and child development minister Baljit Kaur said regional social security teams rescued 31 children involved in begging in Mohali over the past three days as part of the Jeevanjyot campaign. Since August 17, authorities have rescued a total of 68 children from begging in Mohali, making it the district with the highest number of rescues in Punjab so far. Across the state, officials have rescued 807 children, linking them to rehabilitation processes. Following document verification by the district child welfare committee, three children were handed over to their parents, while 28 were placed in child care institutions until verification is completed. Authorities have provided food, shelter, and safety for these children during their stay. Baljit Kaur said the Jeevanjyot campaign focuses not only on rescue but also rehabilitation. Children receive health check-ups, counselling, educational support, and family rehabilitation to prevent a return to begging. The minister warned that the government will take strict legal action against individuals or groups involved in child begging or trafficking. She appealed to residents to support the campaign, advising citizens not to give alms to begging children and to report such cases to Child Helpline 1098 for proper assistance....
