30 more Union ministers headed to flood-hit Punjab
Chandigarh, Oct. 2 -- After visits of 27 Union ministers to the flood-affected areas, 30 more central government ministers have been deputed by the BJP in phase 2 to oversee rehabilitation work in areas devastated by floods. According to information, in the visits, which are set to start after Dussehra (October 2), the Union ministers have been asked to visit flood-hit areas and submit reports to the party high command and the home ministry.
The ministers are also to hold meetings with the district administrations to get feedback on the flood-relief programme and interact with the affected people. Local BJP leaders will accompany the ministers in these visits.
In the second phase, according to the programme received by the party till now, the ministers who will be visiting Punjab include Dr Jitendra Singh, Jadhav Prataprao, Shukanta Majumdar, Jitin Prasad, Krishan Pal Gujjar, Shripad Yesso Naik, Kamlesh Paswan, Dr Chandra Shekhar, Savitri Thakur, Shantanu Thakur, Ajay Tamta, Durgadas Uikey, Nimuben Jayant Bhai Bambhaniya, Satish Chandra Dubey and V Somana.
For this phase, Union minister of state in the Prime Minister's Office Dr Jitendra Singh has been made in-charge and the other ministers will submit a report to him about the "ground realities" of the rehabilitation work. In the first phase, carried out between September 11 and 20, Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai was the in-charge, with visits by Sanjay Seth, Shobha Karandlaje, BL Verma, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Harsh Malhotra, Dr L Murugan, George Kurian, SP Singh Bahel, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Bhagirath Chaudhary, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Murlidhar Mohol, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Pankaj Chaudhary. The initiative is being viewed as another effort by the party to expand its connect in rural heartland of Punjab, which bore the brunt of floods, ahead of 2027 assembly elections.
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has already termed visits by central ministers as "disaster tourism", rapping them for coming only for "photo-ops".
"As the party has already clarified that Rs.1,600-crore flood relief given to the Punjab government is just a token amount, the central government is likely to come out with a road map of special schemes to rebuild roads, houses, classrooms and other infrastructure devastated by floods. These visits are just a precursor to those and have been planned to show that BJP cares for the people of Punjab," said a former minister. Several BJP-led state governments have already extended financial assistance or sent relief material to Punjab as a gesture of solidarity....
