3 held in Coimbatore sexual assault case
Chennai, Nov. 5 -- Three men who allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted a 20-year-old postgraduate student in Coimbatore have been arrested after a brief face-off, police said on Tuesday.
Coimbatore City police commissioner Saravana Sundar said the police shot the three suspects in the leg when they attacked the police while trying to escape.
Chief minister MK Stalin on Tuesday said that he has instructed the police to file a charge sheet in a month in the case which had sparked massive political outrage. "The culprits have been identified and arrested swiftly. I have directed the police to file the charge sheet within a month and ensure that they receive the maximum punishment at the earliest," he said on X.
According to the commissioner, the three suspects were drunk and had stolen a two-wheeler. At around 10.40pm, they spotted a Swift car parked in a spot behind the Coimbatore airport.
"The accused smashed the windshield of the car with a stone and attacked the survivor's friend with a sickle. The accused abducted the survivor and made her walk to an isolated location in the area," the commissioner said. They sexually assaulted the woman, a kilometre away from the airport. The police rescued her on Monday around 4.30am after her injured friend regained consciousness and informed the police, the commissioner said.
The survivor and her friend are undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
"The accused have been identified as T Kaleeswaran (20), Satish T Karuppasamy (29). They have a criminal record and were out on bail," the commissioner said.
Seven teams were formed which checked the crime scene and combed adjacent areas. The CCTV footage from the area showed the two-wheeler used in the crime and it helped police track the accused. The suspects were hiding in the Vellakinaru area in Coimbatore. Police said that the accused tried to attack them with machetes in which a constable was injured.
