Chandigarh/Karnal/Shimla/Jammu, Sept. 4 -- The downpour across north India showed no signs of easing on Wednesday as rain-triggered structural collapses, landslides and flooding claimed 24 lives in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, pummelled regions already on edge and forced the suspension of classes, flights, trains and even cremations. At least seven people were killed in various rain-related incidents in Haryana in the last 24 hours, officials said. In Bhiwani, three girls of the same family were killed when their rented accommodation collapsed on Wednesday morning. Their father, mother and brother sustained injuries in the incident, and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Rohtak, Bhiwani tehsildar Jaibir Singh said. In Yamunanagar, the mud roof of a house collapsed at Bandi village on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of Maan Singh, 45. In Fatehabad, 49-year-old Randhir Saini was killed when the roof of his house collapsed at Samain village while he was asleep. He was taken to Tohana civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead. In Sirsa, divers pulled out the body of medical store owner Vivek Batra from the swollen Raj canal in Dabwali. In Kurukshetra's Shahabad, two brothers died after the roof of a kutcha house collapsed. The deceased have been identified as Sandeep (26) and Kuldeep (27), both from Prayagraj. The death toll in the devastating floods in Punjab mounted to 37, up from 30 on Tuesday, with the state government declaring all 23 districts flood-hit after over 3.55 lakh population largely hit by the deluge. As per the state's flood bulletin, Hoshiarpur district recorded seven deaths (most) due to deluge, followed by six in Pathankot, five in Barnala, four each in Amritsar and Ludhiana district. Bathinda and Mansa districts reported three deaths each, while one death each recorded in Gurdaspur, Patiala, Roopnagar and SAS Nagar districts. It includes those who died due to electrocution, house collapse incidents and drowning due to flooding in affected areas. Schools, colleges and universities were ordered shut till September 7. In Himachal Pradesh, rain fury continued as four more bodies were retrieved from the debris of a landslide near Sundernagar in Mandi district, taking the toll to seven. Two women died and 15 passengers were injured after rolling boulders fell on a private bus near Kalimitti in the Kumarsein area of Shimla. Two people, including an NDRF jawan, were feared dead after two houses collapsed in Kullu district. Authorities in the state have ordered closure of all schools and colleges till September 7 as a precaution Jammu and Kashmir too faced devastation as torrential rains claimed the lives of a woman and her daughter in a house collapse in Rajouri. In another incident, the driver of a Tata Mobile load carrier was swept away in flash floods at Ban Talab locality of Jammu City. Landslides in Reasi blocked the track to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, prolonging the suspension of the pilgrimage for the ninth day. Flood alert was sounded in the Valley on Wednesday, after the Jhelum river crossed the danger level in south Kashmir and was flowing above the alert level in Srinagar, though hopes floated of some relief as weather improved in the afternoon.
