2 wanted for extortion, firing held in encounter
Amritsar, Dec. 16 -- Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested two accused involved in extortion and firing cases linked to foreign-based gangsters after an encounter in the Ramdas area, falling in jurisdiction of Amritsar rural police.
The arrested accused were identified as Vanshpreet Singh of village Mohan Bhandari and Gurpinder Singh of Bath.
While addressing a press conference, DIG (Border Range) Sandeep Goel said joint teams of CIA Staff and Ramdas police traced the accused following specific intelligence inputs.
"During a naka at dhunsi bandh, the accused opened fire at the police party in an attempt to flee. Police retaliated in self-defence, injuring both accused in their legs. No police personnel were injured. The injured accused were shifted to a government hospital," he said.
Earlier, three other associates - Dilraj Singh, alias Dam, Gurpreet Singh and Baljinder Singh - were arrested in a joint operation. Investigations revealed that the gang was operating on the instructions of UK-based handler Maninderpal Singh, who ran an extortion network under aliases Indi Batala and Keshav Batala, as per the officials.
According to police, the accused used to make threatening calls to extort money and carried out firing at houses and business establishments when demands were not met....
