2 Punjab women tourists die in Kullu tree fall amid storm
Kullu/Srinagar, June 1 -- Two women tourists from Punjab were killed when a pine tree fell on them during a severe storm in Kullu district on Saturday, police said. The deceased were identified as Avinash Kaur (56) and Nishu Verma (37), both residents of Ludhiana.
The two were injured when the tree fell on them in Sumaropa area near Kasol. Kullu deputy superintendent of police Rajesh said both succumbed to injuries and the bodies were handed over to their family members after postmortem.
In Jammu and Kashmir, fresh snowfall in the mountains and rain in the plains brought relief from heatwave. The meteorological centre in Srinagar stated the mountains, particularly the Himalayan valley, witnessed light snowfall while the plains experienced light to moderate rains. The weatherman has expected brief light rain spells till June 6.
The inclement weather prompted closure of the mountainous Mughal road, which connects south Kashmir with Pir Panjal districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu, after snowfall at Peer ki Gali.
MeT director Mukhtar Ahmad said, "Snowfall was recorded on Mughal Road, Zojila Pass (connecting Kashmir with Ladakh), Razdan Pass (Bandipora in north Kashmir), Sinthan Top (connecting south Kashmir with Kishtwar) and many other places," Ahmad said.
He said that the snowfall in May and June months was not unusual, though not experienced every year. "The last time snowfall was recorded in these months was on June 12, 2019, and June 27, 2022. This is not unusual. The temperature drops and we experience snowfall here," he said. On June 1 and 2, there will be brief spells of light rain and thundershower at isolated places, the MeT centre predicted. "June 4 to 6 will be generally dry with brief spells of rain at isolated places," it said....
