Lucknow, July 29 -- At least two people, including a 16-year-old boy, died and 29 were injured in a stampede near the Ausaneshwar temple in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh early on Monday, officials aware of the matter said. According to officials, the stampede was triggered at the temple gallery leading to the main temple room around 2.30am after a monkey tugged at a live wire, causing it to fall on a tin shed and create panic among devotees gathered at the temple to perform jalabhishek (offering water as a ritual). "Devotees were offering prayers when a monkey jumped onto an electric wire, causing it to fall on a shed. This led to an electric current passing through the structure," district magistrate Shashank Tripathi said. Two people, identified as Prashant Kumar (16) and Ramesh Kumar (35) -- both residents of Barabanki, were killed in the incident, officials said. The Uttar Pradesh chief minister's office (CMO) announced an ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh to the families of the deceased.
