Amritsar, Oct. 20 -- Two gangsters, arrested for shooting a young welder in Ramdas town, allegedly opened fire at police during a weapon recovery operation near the Ravi river, officials said on Sunday. The accused, identified as Abhinash Kumar, alias Abhi Mehta, and Azad, both residents of New Shivaji Colony in Karnal, Haryana, were injured after police returned fire. The duo had allegedly opened fire on Kamaljeet Singh, also known as Kallu, a local welder, prompting a police investigation and manhunt. According to Ajnala deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Gurwinder Singh Aulakh, the gangsters were apprehended from Karnal, and later taken near the Ravi river for the recovery of weapons used in the crime. However, during the recovery operation, they opened fire on the police team in an attempt to escape. In retaliation, Agyapal Singh, station house officer of Ramdas police station, returned fire.
