2 bike-borne men fire over 30 rounds outside Phase-7 house
Mohali, Nov. 8 -- In a shocking incident, two unidentified men fired over 30 shots outside the house of a retired Punjab irrigation department officer in Phase 7, Mohali, past Thursday midnight, shattering the quiet of the night.
Arriving on a motorcycle around 12.25 am, the masked duo first opened fire at the officer's house, before releasing more rounds in other directions, triggering panic in the area.
Alarmed residents stepped out to discover bullet marks on several parked cars, and the main gate and boundary wall of the officer's house.
Police later recovered several empty bullet shells from the site and a piece of paper with the name "Kala Rana" written on it, referring to the gangster currently lodged in a Delhi jail.
CCTV footage reviewed by police showed the two men pulling out guns, loading bullets, firing repeatedly towards multiple houses and speeding away. One of them was in an orange kurta, while the other was wearing a black-and-white chequered T-shirt.
The complainant, Maninder Singh, said he and his family were jolted awake by loud sounds, which they believed was due to firecrackers.
"But when we came out, we saw vehicles riddled with bullets and realised what had happened," he said, adding that he had no enmity and never received any threat or extortion calls. Police have registered a case under the Arms Act.
DSP Prithvi Singh Chahal said, "We have found a paper with the name 'Kala Rana' written on it. At this point, investigation is underway and it would be premature to comment on any link or motive."
Police are analysing CCTV footage and tracing the motorcycle used in the crime. The incident has prompted enhanced patrolling and security checks in the city.
This is not the first time that gangster Kala Rana's name has surfaced in Mohali. In May 2025, his name was also found on a note left behind by shooters who opened fire at Punjabi music producer Pinky Dhaliwal's residence in Sector 71.
Police had later arrested one of the shooters, Ankit Rana, linked to the Kala Rana and Lawrence Bishnoi gangs. The motive behind the attack was extortion, police said, adding that the gangsters stole a motorcycle from Haridwar specifically to execute the crime.
Rana is named in over 30 cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and criminal intimidation across Haryana....
