14 villages added under Mohali MC limits
Mohali, Nov. 30 -- In a major administrative move, the Punjab government has issued a fresh notification announcing the expansion of the Mohali Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction, officially including a total of 14 villages under the civic body.
The newly added villages include Lakhnour, Landran, Balongi, Balyali, Ballo Majra, Nanu Majra, Mauli Baidwan and Sambhalki, along with several others. This development has, however, led to confusion regarding the electoral identity and rights of the residents.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Mohali district president Parvinder Singh Sohana has urged the Punjab government to immediately clarify the situation. Sohana pointed out that tremendous confusion had emerged because two notifications were issued on November 28: one expanding the Mohali MC limits, and the second notifying the block samiti and zila parishad elections. As a result, people are uncertain about their electoral identity and voting rights.
He highlighted that these villages previously fell under the block samiti and zila parishad jurisdictions.
"With their inclusion in the expanded municipal limits, their gram panchayats will automatically stand dissolved, raising a crucial question. Will the residents of these villages now be eligible to contest block samiti and zila parishad elections or will they be restricted to contesting only MC elections?," he said....
