14 held for iftar on boat, throwing leftover chicken in the Ganga
VARANASI, March 18 -- The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested 14 men for allegedly organising an Iftar gathering on a boat in the Ganga after a video purportedly showed them eating chicken biryani and discarding the remains into the holy river in Varanasi, a senior officer said on Tuesday.
The police action came on a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Varanasi unit chief Rajat Jaiswal, alleging the act by the accused defiled a place of worship and hurt religious feelings of Hindus.
"A video went viral on Monday, purportedly showing a group of people holding an Iftar party on a boat on the Ganga and consuming biryani during the gathering," Vijay Pratap Singh, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Varanasi, said.
Police said the accused are Varanasi residents. A case has been registered under sections 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), and 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), among others of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as relevant section of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. "Based on the complaint, a case was registered. So far, 14 people have been arrested; further legal action is being taken," the ACP said.
In his complaint, Jaiswal alleged that the act was deliberate, intended to hurt Hindu sentiments. Police said Kotwali station team located the alleged participants near Gaighat.
