TARN TARAN, Oct. 19 -- A total of 12 nominations were filed on Saturday for the November 11 Tarn Taran bypoll. The counting of votes will be held on November 14. The seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal, 62, on June 27 this year. October 21 will be the last date for filing the nominations, while scrutiny will be held on October 22. Those who filed nominations include Mandeep Singh, brother of murder accused Sandeep Singh alias Sunny, and advocate Komalpreet Singh, who is a close relative of late MLA Sohal and worked as his personal assistant. Komalpreet is a rebel candidate and filed nomination as an independent candidate after the AAP named former MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu as its pick for the bypoll. Mandeep filed papers in the presence of representatives of various Panthic parties, including jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh-led Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), SAD's breakaway faction, SAD (Amritsar), and supporters of Sarbat Khalsa-appointed parallel acting jathedar of Akal Takht Dhian Singh Mand and others. His brother Sunny is an accused in the murder case of Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri. Sunny had on September 10 attacked three former police officers inside Patiala Central Jail. One of the victims, former inspector Suba Singh, 83, died of injuries, while the other two were former DSP Gurbachan Singh and former inspector Inderjit Singh. Others who filed nominations include Arun Kumar Khurmi from Akhil Bharatiya Shiv Sena Rashtrawadi, Sucha Singh (covering candidate) from Bharatiya Janata Party, Leena Sandhu (covering candidate) from Congress, and independent candidates Harpal Singh, Harbrinder Kaur, Neetu, Vijay Kumar, Nirmal Kaur, Jaswant Singh, and Naib Singh from the Nationalist Justice Party. Returning officer Gurmeet Singh said that nominations can be filed up to October 21, except for October 19 (Sunday) and October 20 (Monday, Diwali).
