10-year-old Nepalese girl's rape by uncles shocks city
India, April 19 -- A 10-year-old Nepalese girl was found to be over 30 weeks pregnant in July 2017. Her parents had taken her to the hospital when she complained of abdominal pain, but doctors discovered she was pregnant. Police probe revealed that the girl had been repeatedly raped by her maternal uncles - both of whom were arrested. One of them was identified as the biological father of the child after a DNA test. The pregnancy went unnoticed by the family for months, and once discovered, it was too late for an abortion. The Supreme Court denied a plea for abortion in July 2017, citing that the pregnancy had progressed beyond the permissible limit and could pose a risk to the child's life. The girl gave birth to a baby girl in August 2017 at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. The newborn was put up for adoption and handed over to the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA). The case was the first, involving a minor victim, to arrive at a conclusion after a 66-day trial. A district court sentenced the two convicts to life in prison till death in November 2017....
