'Wouldn't wish this trauma on anyone'
Jalandhar, Oct. 1 -- Nishan Singh, 20, of Chakoki village in Kapurthala's Dhilwan, was among the youngest deportees as he was only 16 years old in 2022 when he headed out to the US on the donkey route.
Nishan's mother, Balwinder Kaur, says her son sunk into depression on his return as he had spent four years struggling with uncertainty only to be deported. Unable to bear the stigma, the youngster didn't step out of the house for months, she says.
"Being a mother, I wouldn't want any son to go through what my son endured over four years just to enter the US and be sent back in 15 days," she says.
Nishan, who entered the US on January 23 and was deported on February 15, has now started working in a local finance company. "He underwent months of counselling," says Balwinder, recalling the tough time.
Nishan's father is a soldier posted in Jammu and Kashmir. On his statement, an FIR was registered at Dhilwan police station against two travel agents, who duped his family of Rs.42 lakh.
"The agents approached us for a compromise and agreed to return the money but we've got nothing back yet," says Balwinder. She says soon after completing matriculation, the agents sent Nishan to France in 2022, where he stayed illegally for two years, before traffickers sent him to Suriname via Spain. "He was handed over to donkers in Panama, who made him along with other youngsters walk through jungles for 16 days before they reached Mexico and entered the US border but were caught on January 23," she says.
Balwinder admits the family sent him on the donkey route, hoping he would settle down early in life and help support the education of his two younger sisters....
