'Thinking is the first step towards change'
India, March 26 -- Some days in history do not pass quietly-they return, asking us what we have learnt. March 23, observed as Shaheedi Diwas, is one such day. It brings back the courage of Saheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar-young minds who chose sacrifice not out of impulse, but out of deep conviction.
But beyond remembrance lies a deeper responsibility. Are we merely recalling their sacrifice, or are we understanding their ideas?
It is tempting to remember martyrs through emotion alone. Yet, their true strength lies in clarity of thought. Bhagat Singh was not just fearless-he was thoughtful. He believed that his ideas could shake the foundations of injustice. This is where Shaheedi Diwas becomes relevant for today's learners. It reminds them that thinking is the first step towards change.
Education, therefore, must not create silent learners-it must nurture questioning minds.
The vision of National Education Policy 2020 calls for exactly this transformation.
It urges classrooms to move beyond rote learning towards curiosity, critical thinking and meaningful understanding. Shaheedi Diwas offers a living context to practice this vision. Instead of simply narrating history, teachers can invite students to reflect: What does courage mean in today's world? Can standing for truth be a form of modern patriotism?
How can young minds contribute to society without waiting for a crisis? Such reflections shape not only knowledge, but character.
The newly developed NCERT textbooks mirror this shift. They do not treat history as a closed chapter but as an open conversation.
To become facilitators of thought-guiding discussions, encouraging debate, and connecting lessons with life. The role is not to provide ready-made answers, but to nurture independent thinking.
To engage actively-to ask, imagine, express, and reflect and connect with Indian rootedness. Learning is no longer about memorising events, but about understanding their meaning and relevance. In such an environment, Shaheedi Diwas becomes a living lesson in values-courage, justice and responsibility.
True education lies in experience. A classroom that writes a letter as Bhagat Singh, stages a debate on freedom or reflects on social responsibility is not just remembering history-it is reliving it. These moments quietly shape individuals who are aware, sensitive, and responsible, because when students begin to connect with ideas, learning flows naturally-like a river finding its path.
In this journey, the teacher becomes a guide who shapes not just intellect, but character. A meaningful question, a thoughtful discussion, or even a moment of silence can leave a lasting imprint. The teacher does not impose inspiration-he or she creates the conditions where it can grow.
Dear students, Shaheedi Diwas is not asking you to sacrifice your lives-it is asking you to live with purpose. You can honour these heroes by: Choosing truth over convenience, Asking questions instead of accepting blindly, Respecting others and standing against injustice, Using your education to build, not just to succeed. Remember, courage today may not demand a battlefield. It may simply require you to be honest, responsible, and aware.
Shaheedi Diwas is not about looking back in sorrow; it is about looking ahead with responsibility.
The martyrs dreamt of a nation that thinks freely and acts wisely. As our education system evolves through NEP 2020 and NCERT's new vision, this day must become a turning point-where remembrance transforms into realization. They ignited the fire of freedom; it is now our duty to keep it alive through thought, learning, and action....
