Hoshiarpur, July 17 -- As the 18th Lok Sabha completes its first year, here's a look at first-time MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal's performance in the lower House of Parliament and his plans for the constituency. I view my inaugural year as a constructive learning curve and a period of active contribution. Participating in national debates and engaging with colleagues from different parts of the country was an enriching experience. I raised core issues like agriculture, housing, and infrastructure and brought my constituency's concerns directly into parliamentary discussions. Tabling the Motion of Thanks and participating in the detailed budget discussion on agriculture and farmers' welfare was the high point. Attending the Parliament session in itself was a high point. A key moment was raising the demand for a special Rs.20,000-crore package for crop diversification in the state. Additionally, I had the opportunity to speak on the importance of safeguarding the Constitution and upholding the legacy of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar. I would like to see more sittings and longer sessions. More time in the House allows thorough scrutiny of budgets and in-depth policy debates, especially on vital sectors like agriculture and rural infrastructure. Special sessions should be held when something of national concern happens. For instance, a special session could have been called on the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent events, including Operation Sindoor. If the government was articulating its views across the world, it should have discussed the matter with its own parliamentarians also. A multi-pronged strategy works the best, I believe. Asking relevant, well-researched questions to hold ministries accountable, participating in debates actively, demanding budget allocation to spotlight key priorities and through private members' motions. Additionally, leveraging Zero-Hour submissions and calling attention motions can help highlight important concerns. In the first year, I facilitated approval for a government college in Mukhliana village, widening of 13.01 km of road from Hoshiarpur- Phagwara road to Falahi, Harmoya via Tajowal Rakran, and construction of new link roads serving rural communities. A Rs 75-lakh worth wastewater management system was started in Phuglana and support was provided for rural water projects. I advocated a Rs 20,000-crore central package for crop diversification and better infrastructure in procurement centres. In the coming years, my focus will be on three key areas: health, education, and infrastructure. Getting a PGI satellite centre or similar advanced facility and a government medical college in Hoshiarpur and a polytechnic or ITI in Chabbewal by 2027, are my top priorities. As a radiologist, I'm committed to strengthening rural healthcare and affordable diagnostics in my constituency. next: Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, Congress MP from patiala...
