India, April 19 -- Named after the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, Sahibzada Ajit Singh, SAS Nagar, which was earlier a part of Rupnagar district, became the 18th district of Punjab on April 14, 2006. Conceived after the trifurcation of Punjab and its capital becoming a Union Territory in 1966, the original plan of Mohali (as it is still popularly known as) was a mere extension of the road and design system of Chandigarh without any unique planning.
